About BTA

England is the land of origin of the suit and has evolved over many centuries.

In 17th century a three-piece suit, comprising of a frock coat, breeches and a silk waistcoat was worn by all wealthy and aristocratic gentlemen.

Towards the end of the 18th century George “Beau” Brummell, close friend and equerry to The Prince Regent, began to create a style of attire which was more comfortable and flattering to the figure. The evolution of which brought a change towards the modern lounge suit.

The basic pattern has been developed through generations of bespoke tailors. And, by the late 1930's the suit we are familiar with today has become the accepted uniform. The British initiative established itself as a forerunner, and although copied and varied globally, a British Bespoke suit still remains a prestigious wardrobe addition for aficionado's worldwide.

The Bespoke Tailors Alliance (BTA), has been developed by a group of elite bespoke tailors from the UK, which has been a centre of excellence of bespoke tailoring for over 200 years. The BTA aims to promote the knowledge and skill required to develop global bespoke industry standards.

The current chairman, Mr Philip Jones, is a director of George Brummell Ltd. He has 30 years experience in business consultancy.
